Untitled (based on Primitive Blaze) was held back from publication by Bridget Riley, who initially considered the image to be not as she had imagined, hence the title. A more finely drawn version was published two years later: Untitled (based on Blaze) of 1964 (Schubert 4). Rediscovering the undistributed edition of Primitive Blaze in the early 2000s, it was by then clear that this work was an important document of her development as a printmaker and permission was given for the edition to be sold. Despite this recent distribution, the small edition of 40 and increasing interest in Riley's black and white works both mean that this work is already rare.
