A Retrospective
Exhibition 2-26 November
Bryan Pearce's works have always been unmistakeable, such full but calmly ordered views of everything that he could see at the time of painting, outlined and coloured with a tangible eagerness. That his work should fit into the twentieth century tradition of St.Ives painting from Wallis onward is a curious accident, for his work is relatively immune to influence. The rare illness from which he has suffered all his life, and which he cheerfully ignores, only makes the fact of his painting remarkable - his work already is remarkable and would be so no matter who had made it, or where.
Pearce was born in 1929 in St.Ives and studied at the art school there, encouraged to paint primarily by his mother - the artist Mary Pearce, as well as the many famous local artists of the St. Ives school. Many exhibitions have followed and his work is held in museums and galleries around the world - not least the Tate Gallery, Kettle's Yard and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. He is looked after by devoted carers and eminent trustees, repaying their encouragement with his brilliant work.
We are delighted to present the first serious retrospective in London of Bryan Pearce's paintings and drawings to celebrate a career that now spans five decades.
