Uglow studied at Camberwell School of Art 1948-51 and then at the Slade 1951-4. He then taught at those same institutions in the early 1960s. In 1961 he had his first solo show at Beaux Arts Gallery and won a John Moores Liverpool Exhibition prize. In 1964 he was included in the Arts Council's 6 Young Painters, at which time he became increasingly more noted. The Whitechapel Art Gallery held shows of his work in 1974 and 1989. He is particularly noted for his female nude and still life subjects of which he is a meticulous painter. The Tate Gallery and the Arts Council hold his work.
