Jochen Plogsties was born in 1974 in Cochem, Germany. From1997-2001 he studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts Mainz, Germany under Professor Friedemann Hahn. In 2003, he studied at the Academy of Visual Arts, Leipzig, Germany under Professor Neo Rauch.
His style of painting does not take place within the well-established framework of existing image reproduction ceremonies. How an image begins has no relation to how it ends. Polgsties's paintings are process-based. Previous layers of paint remain as signatures, overlays weave the work into the fabric of the passing time. The fact that the much altered, more thickly layered and pastier images retain a sketch-like character provides further indication that painterly enthusiasm is never allowed to slip over into product fetishism. Instead, tribute is paid to production - the path towards the end product - in a way that is both skilled and self-reflective.
