Although born in Berlin, Frank Auerbach has studied and lived most of his life in London. From his student days at St. Martin's and the Royal College of Art, he has grown to become an internationally acclaimed painter with work in many great collections. His subjects mainly tend to be expressive observations of a single model or his north London surroundings in Camden Town. His paintings are characterised by heavy impasto and earthy colours, but in recent paintings vivid colours have begun to appear in the work.
